Crowds of tourists arrive in Hat Yai for Hari Raya celebrations

SONGKHLA, THAILAND, July 28 (TNA) - Crowds of tourists, both Thai and foreigners from neighbouring countries, have arrived in Hat Yai for their Hari Raya celebrations this week, making trade and tourism-releated businesses in the southern Thai business hub in Songkhla Province become more lively. More of the tourists, mostly those from neighbouring Malaysia, arrived in Hat Yai on Monday morning to celebrate their Hari Raya holiday, marking the end of the annual Muslim Ramadan fast. President of the Tourism Business Federation of Songkhla Surapol Kampalanonwat told reporters that hotel rooms in Hat Yai have been fully booked during July 28-31 by both Thai and Malaysian tourists. Surapol assessed that Hat Yai should welcome more than 40,000 visitors during this week's Hari Raya holiday, earning the southern Thai business centre at least 100 million baht tourism-related revenues. Surapol said that the local tourism industry appears not to be affected by last Friday's car bomb attack in Thailand's southernmost Betong District of Yala Province. However, more security forces have been deployed in Hat Yai to facilitate traffic, provide on-foot patrols and station at several checkpoints to boost confidence among locals and foreign tourists. Similar intensified security measures have also been implemented in Songkhla's Muang and Sadao Districts bordering the violence-plagued southern Thai border provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani to maintain peace and order.(TNA)
