CSTO has ‘arsenal of tools’ to protect organization’s sovereignty - Bordyuzha

DUSHANBE, March 13. /TASS/. The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) has a whole arsenal of tools for protecting the sovereignty of the organization’s member-countries in the event of an external threat, CSTO General Secretary Nikolay Bordyuzha told a news conference on Friday. According to him, currently there’s an external threat for Central Asian countries coming from Afghanistan. "We have information about an increase in the number of extremist armed groups in Afghanistan and do not rule out the possibility of their penetration into the territories of the organization’s member-countries," Bordyuzha said. One cannot overlook the fact that "those armed people who are currently fighting in the ranks of extremist and terrorist groups abroad may once return to their home countries to achieve their political goals". However, the Collective Security Treaty Organization has all necessary forces and means for protecting the integrity and sovereignty of its member-countries, Bordyuzha warned. "CSTO has a sufficient number of rapid deployment units and 22,000 well-trained elite troops," he said, adding that the organization will need no more than three days for full-scale deployment of its forces in a trouble spot and for the localization of the conflict. During his three-day working visit to Tajikistan, which holds the rotating chairmanship in CSTO, Bordyuzha held talks with the heads of the country’s security agencies. His meeting with President Emomali Rahmon centered on the tasks facing the organization and the situation on the Tajik-Afghan border. Read more
