Deputy Chief of Thailand's Sheikul Islam Office killed in van crash

SURAT THANI, August 16 (TNA) - A deputy chief of Thailand's Sheikul Islam Office was killed in a van crash in the Thai South on Saturday, together with the driver, while five other passengers were injured, three of them in critical conditions. The van, belonging to the Central Islamic Council of Thailand (CICT), slid off a road and crashed into a tree in Thailand's southern Surat Thani Province, killing the driver instantly, while the 55-year-old Imam, who is a deputy secretary general of the Sheikul Islam Office and a CICT member, identified as Rasamee Damchawai, died on the way to a nearby hospital. The accident took place earlier in the day, when the driver of the Toyata Commuter Van, travelling from Bangkok's neighbouring Pathum Thani Province on Friday (Aug 15) night, lost control of the vehicle, turning the van off the road and crashed into the tree on the side of the southern bound of No. 41 Road in Surat Thani's Punpin District. Local police initially assumed that the driver of of the van dozed off while heading toward a destination in Songkhla Province for an event, causing the fatal accident. (TNA)
