"Derasat" holds a consultation workshop to Prepare for the First Voluntary National Review on Sustainable Development Goal*

Manama, Apr.26 (BNA): The Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International Studies and Energy (Derasat), in collaboration with the National Information Committee, today held a consultation workshop bringing together all segments of civil society interested in the field of sustainable development, to exchange views on the National Voluntary Report on the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The workshop is the second of three planned workshops.  During the event, His Excellency Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Undersecretary for International Affairs, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Derasat, explained that the consultation workshop will serve as a truly collaborative platform for the exchange of ideas in addition to further enhancing citizen participation in the Kingdom’s comprehensive development.  The Deputy Chief Executive of Statistics and Population Register at the Information and eGovernment Authority, Dr. Nabil Mohammed bin Shams, stated that the establishment of the National Information Committee, formed under the chairmanship of the Minister of Cabinet Affairs, will do much to boost sustainable development. The Committee serves an essential purpose, overseeing the Millennium Development Goals agenda and ensuring these goals are linked to the Kingdom’s current National Action Plan (2015-2018). In addition, the Committee is managing the establishment of a comprehensive national database that will provide accurate information to assist sustainable development.  As a result of these measures, which prove the government’s firm commitment to sustainable development, 80% of the UN Sustainable Development Goals are already being implemented through the Kingdom’s current National Action Plan.  The Resident Representative of the UN Development Programme in Bahrain, Amin El Sharkawi, praised the measures Bahrain has taken to incorporate sustainability into its development program, and celebrated the opportunities available to citizens to have their aspirations for sustainable development reflected in the Voluntary Report, which will be reviewed during the ministerial meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council's high-level political forum in July 2018.  Bahrain’s commitment to achieving sustainable development is reflected in the current Government Action Plan (2015-2018), the Country Plan signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the UN Strategic Partnership Framework (2018-2022), each of which will help to realise the goals of Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030.
