DEWA urges customers to limit electricity usage between 12-6pm to protect the environment

Dubai (WAM): Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) urges customers to limit electricity usage between 12-6pm to protect the environment and says environmental sustainability helps preserve natural resources for us all and for generations to come by making the most efficient use of our resources to ensure their sustainability and reduce damage to the environment. With global warming leading to climate change and the population set to grow to nine billion by 2050, sustaining the basic quality of life is increasingly becoming a challenge, DEWA affirms. ''We are consuming so much, and so quickly, that we are already living far beyond the earth's capacity to support us. Integrating sustainable practices in the way we live and work is therefore imperative. Organisations and companies have to do their part in keeping the environment and fulfil their social requirements as key platforms for innovation on strategy, design, and manufacturing, DEWA adds. The Peak-Load campaign, initiated by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), encourages users to limit their use of devices that use a lot of power, such as irons, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, water heaters, and electric ovens during peak consumption hours from 12-6pm, and reschedule their use to the morning and evening as much as possible. The campaign also urges commercial and industrial consumers to shift their less-critical energy operations from peak to off-peak hours. This will help save fuel used in power generation, and contribute to reducing emissions that pollute the environment. "DEWA works to establish a sustainable society that contributes to limiting the depletion of natural resources, in fulfilment of the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy which aims to reduce energy demand by 30 percent by 2030. To reach a sustainable environment, we all have to follow a lifestyle that fulfils current demands while ensuring that future generations will be able to fulfil their demands as well. DEWA organises and launches various awareness campaigns to promote rational consumption of natural resources to preserve them and support sustainable development for generations to come. The Peak-Load campaign has been rolled out to encourage responsible behaviour and shared responsibility among DEWA’s consumers in their homes, offices and factories, in terms of electricity and water consumption and reduce the threat of global warming," said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA. Using electrical appliances and equipment during the peak-load hours, which are typically from 12-6pm during the summer months, adds to the power load within the electricity network. DEWA has to enhance its power generation capacity during peak-load hours. The campaign programmes aims to educate residential consumers on how to contribute to reducing the load on the power-generation system by using their high-power-consuming electrical devices outside peak hours. Air-conditioning represents as much as 60 percent of the peak load consumption. By reducing air-conditioning even marginally, it is possible for consumers not only to lower their electricity bills but also increase the overall reliability and efficiency of the electrical system. If every customer changed the air-conditioning in their homes or offices from 20 degrees Celsius to either 23 or 24 degrees during electrical peak hours, this will considerably reduce energy consumption. By adopting such a small measure, we’ll be able to help in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and conserve natural resources. "The main objective of this campaign is to raise awareness on rational power consumption among residential, industrial, and commercial. Rational consumption does not mean that we need to stop using electricity or water. It simply means that we only need to shift non-critical loads to off-peak hours and re-distribute usage of high-power-consuming devices to off-peak hours. If we don’t adopt sustainability in consuming electricity, we will always need to burn more gas to generate more power. It is significant that all community members participate in the peak-load campaign to sustain our natural resources," said Amal Koshak, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications at DEWA. – Emirates News Agency, WAM – http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395268702630.html
