Doc highlights impact of “Rhinoceros” on Eugène Ionesco and Persian translator

TEHRAN,Nov.3(MNA) -- Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Zamani has recently completed a documentary about the impact of Eugene Ionesco’s “Rhinoceros” on the French playwright and the Persian translator of the play, Ahmad Kamyabi Mask. The documentary entitled “Rhinos and Nonrhinos” will premiere at the cinematheque of the Iranian Artists Forum today at 5 p.m., as announced by the forum in a press release on Saturday. Kamyabi Mask, Zamani, theater experts Qotbeddin Sadeqi, Shahram Zargar, Nasser Aqaii, Farhad Aiish and Mohammadreza Khaki are scheduled attend a review session of the film after screening. “‘Rhinos and Nonrhinos’ is about ‘Rhinoceros’ and Dr. Ahmad Kamyabi Mask and Eugene Ionesco,” Zamani said. “Rhinoceros have changed the lives of many people and this (documentary) is about two of them,” he added. Kamyabi Mask, 69, was awarded the Chevalier of the Order of Academic Palms in December 2011. The order is presented by the French government to academics, and cultural and educational figures. He got a Ph.D. in theater from Paul Valéry University in Montpellier, France and his dissertation on Eugène Ionesco’s “Rhinoceros” attracted the attention of several literary critics and Ionesco. The dissertation was published in a book entitled “Qua-t-on fait de Rhinocéros dEugène lonesco à travers le monde?”. Ionesco wrote a preface to the book. In his research, Kamyabi Mask reviewed the performances of Ionesco’s “Rhinoceros” in Germany, France, Romania, Iran, Japan and the United States, and interpreted them according to the social and political situations in the countries. The renowned 20th century French stage director Jean-Louis Barrault staged “Rhinoceros” after reading Kamyabi’s research on the play, Kamyabi previously said. Some of his books, including “Ionesco and His Theater” and “Interviews with Samuel Becket, Eugène Ionesco and J.-L. Barrault”, have been published in French and Persian.
