Doha to Host Second Edition of Mal Lawal Exhibition Next November

Doha, March 13 (QNA) - Under the patronage of Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) on Thursday announced the second Mal Lawal exhibition taking place from November 2014 to January 2015 at the Qatar International Exhibition Centre (QIEC). Mal Lawal, meaning "from the old days" in Qatari dialect, will be reflecting on the personal collections of collectors across Qatar and the GCC. Visual treasures displayed will include, all categories of rare collections, such as artefacts, manuscripts, weapons, Islamic collections, old maps, ethnographic/heritage items, antiques and antiquities, jewelries, clothing & accessories etc., Subject to a certain criteria, objects from all over the world eligible to be displayed in the second Mal Lawal Exhibition. The uniqueness of the exhibition lies in its depiction of the past, present and future of Qatar. Collectors are invited to participate by contributing pieces they feel reflect the regions heritage and culture and works that tell stories of day to day activities and livelihoods. The general public will have a deeper understanding of Qatar’s, heritage and culture. The collections exhibited reveal an insight into Qatar’s past, present and future. They tell a story about daily life and past resources. For his part, HE Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani, the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the QMA while addressing a joint press conference held at the Qatar International Exhibition Centre this morning, said ,"The success exhibition proved in its first edition was its first experiment in stimulating the owners of holdings to reveal their riches and treasures to widen the expansion of the participation during the second edition to open the way before all the brethren of the Gulf Cooperation Council to be present with their contents and treasures during the next edition. Nasser Al Hammadi, the Curator and Heritage Expert at the National Museum of Qatar and chairperson of the Second Edition of Mal Lawal said in similar remarks to reporters , "As we continue to work towards our nations vision, we are constantly reminded and inspired by our past. Elaborating "Al Hammadi said, Mal Lawal will be doing exactly that, as it invites collectors to enter the Museum world. This will qualify them to be able to reflect our traditions, which in turn can be carried into the future. We are excited to be hosting a show that celebrates the regions identity." "Exhibitions such as Mal Lawal enable us at QMA to achieve some of our many ambitions to connect with our country’s many different communities and the community of the wider GCC. Namely, to foster a spirit of national participation, and to demonstrate how we can all learn about culture and heritage through such exhibitions and other museum events. We want to encourage the conservation of our culture as well as the celebration of our heritage. Mal Lawal is just one example of how the community can play an important role in showcasing our nations culture. Such exhibitions educate visitors about national identity and allow collaboration not only between Qatar and the wider GCC but between museum bodies and the general public." Hammadi continued. The exhibition is part of QMAs series of programs and exhibitions, encouraging audiences to participate in the cultural development of Qatar. It follows on a similar 2012 show of the same name, in which both collectors and artists exhibited their work to promote the education of and engagement with, Qatar’s history and heritage. For his part, Mr. Stephen Kelly, President and General Manager of Occidental Petroleum of Qatar Ltd. (Oxy Qatar), the Principal Sponsor of the exhibition said: "Oxy Qatar is delighted to partner with QMA to support the second Mal Lawal exhibition. After sponsoring the inaugural exhibition in 2012, we are excited to see it return, and we look forward to it becoming a longstanding tradition in Qatar. Due to the sheer scale of the exhibition; the largest of its kind in Qatar, the Exhibition Centre in Doha has been selected to house the event. QMA connects the museums, cultural institutions and heritage sites in Qatar and creates the conditions for them to thrive and flourish. It centralizes resources and provides a comprehensive organization for the development of museums and cultural projects, with a long term ambition of creating a strong and sustainable cultural infrastructure for Qatar.
