Thai DPM:Government plans to lift martial law

BANGKOK, March 30 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, who oversees national security, has confirmed that the government plans to impose Section 44 of the Provisional Constitution in place of the martial law to maintain order with no human rights violation. General Prawit, who is also Defence Minister, made the confirmation on Monday, saying that the prime minister will have the final say what will be done. Asked to weigh Section 44 against the martial law, General Prawit explained that the martial law appears to be harsh in the eye of the international community and both laws are considered equally effective in terms of the restoration of national order. According to the deputy prime minister, the application of Section 44 will also focus on detention, searches and the issuance of arrest warrants against suspected wrongdoers. In response to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)'s concerns over the planned enforcement of Section 44 that it could result in the prime minister's having too much power, proposing that the government exercise the Internal Security Act (ISA) or the executive decree on public administration in emergency situations instead, the deputy prime minister insisted that the legal enforcement is aimed only at protecting the nation from the bad and good people should not have to be worried. The deputy prime minister stressed that ISA or the executive decree on public administration in emergency situations had been imposed over the past decade but to no avail, promising that the interim Thai government will protect human rights. Recently, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha told journalists that the exercise of Section 44 has been considered and his government will try the best to keep order among people. (TNA)
