DPM:ICJ ruling on Preah Vihear-related case expected early 2014

BANGKOK, October 11 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul says that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is now expected to rule on a case related to the Preah Vihear Temple, filed by Cambodia, early next year. Speaking to reporters on Friday regarding to progress of the judicial process of the case, Surapong foresaw that The Hague-based World Court is likely to rule on the case in February 2014, rather than by the end of this year as earlier anticipated. Surapong noted that the ICJ tribunal remains engaged with busy schedules for other pending cases. The ICJ ruled in 1962 that the Preah Vihear Temple, located along the Thai-Cambodian border, belongs to neighbouring Cambodia. In April 2013, Phnom Penh then asked the World Court to re-interpret its 1962 verdict on the ownership of an unsettled plot of land surrounding the ancient Hindu Temple, whether it belongs to Cambodia or Thailand, following sovereignty disputes over the area by the two neighbouring countries.(TNA)
