Drug Dealers Deserve Death Sentence: BNN

Palangka Raya, Dec 12 (Antara) - The National Anti Drug Agency (BNN) of Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, said drug dealer and producers deserve death sentence to give a deterrent effect. "We fully support the firm decision of the government to carry out death execution of drug dealers," head of BNN of Palangka Raya,M Soedja`said here on Friday. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has repeatedly stated rejection of clemency for death convicts in drug cases in the country. Indonesia has become profitable market for international drug syndicates with victims ranging from young to old people. The majority of the victims are young people including school and university students. BNN has even arrested high level government officials, police and military and lawmakers both as users and dealers. A survey showed that the majority of the Indonesian people support death sentence for drug dealers and producers. Lawmaker Aboe Bakar Al Habsy of the Commission III of the House of Representatives, said the firm decision by President Jokowi rejecting clemency for convicted drug dealers is supported by the majority of the people. "Not only me but the majority of Indonesians appreciate the bold decision of the president," Aboe Bakar said. If the government has executed death sentence for terrorists, greater courage should be shown by the government in dealing with drug dealers, he said. Drug dealers and producers have inflicted much worse damage to the nation, the politician from the PKS party said. He said there are around 5.8 million drug users in the country and 50 of Indonesians died of drug related causes everyday. "Not to mention other damage such as accidents, crimes and broken home or family," he said. Earlier Attorney General HM Prasetyo described as meeting the principle of justice President Jokowi`s rejection to grant clemency for 64 drug convicts in the death row. "I think we should support the rejection by the president of an appeal for clemency from the drug convicts," Prasetyo said He said he is aware that there are pros and cons over the decision of the president . "Some people argued that the rejection is against human right, but we must not forget the serious damage caused by drug abuses," he said. He said in 2014, around 30 people died everyday among 4 million drug addicts in Indonesia. "The damage is not only in urban areas but has spread to small villages," he added. President Jokowi said Indonesia was already facing a state of emergency in the fight against drug.
