Drunk Driver Faces 20 Years In Jail

Jakarta, August 2 (ANTARA) - State prosecutors have demanded 20 years of imprisonment for Afriyani who allegedly killed nine pedestrians while driving under the influence of alcohol on January 22. "We want the judge to sentence the defendant to 20 years of jail," prosecutor Tamalia Roza said at a court session here on Wednesday. The prosecutor has charged Afriyani with Article 338 on murder, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. The prosecutor also wants Afriyani to be charged with Regulation No. 22/2009 on traffic. Afriyani has been accused of being guilty for violating traffic rules, killing nine people and injuring several pedestrians. In response to the prosecutor`s request, Afriyani said she would prepare her defence plea. The court will resume on August 8. On January 22, Afriyani allegedly ran her SUV over 13 pedestrians near Tugu Tani area, Central Jakarta. Nine among the 13 victims died, while the rest sustained injuries. According to police investigation, a few hours before the accident, Afriyani was partying with her friends at a local club.
