E-voting to be used in Thailand

BANGKOK, July 14 (TNA) - The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) is developing the country’s electronic voting (e-voting) system, with a new version of e-voting machines to be first used in the upcoming referendum on the new Constitution, initially set to be held on January 10, 2016. Somchai Srisuttiyakorn, a Thai election commissioner tasked with electoral management, told journalists of the plan, after chairing Monday’s meeting on upgrading e-voting machines for use in referendums and all other elections in the country in the future, in which top computer engineering experts and other concerned parties participated. Somchai explained that Thailand's future elections will be more complicated, as it is anticipated to have more candidates and political parties, as well as, probably, newly-introduced electoral systems, like the open-list one, and a more flexible, locally-produced voting machines with an advance touch-screen operating system applicable for various electoral systems are, thus, now needed to be developed. According to the election commissioner, his election agency has resolved to use e-voting machines in some constituencies in Bangkok for the upcoming referendum to see whether the new Thai Charter is approved by the majority of voters. The election commissioner assured that voters will be provided with knowledge and proper information on how to use the newly-developed e-voting machines prior to the forthcoming referendum. (TNA)
