Earthquake jolts Golestan prov

Gorgan, Golestan prov, Dec 3, IRNA – The Managing Director of Golestan Crisis Management Office Sadeghali Moghaddam said that an earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale rocked Aliabad-e Katul in Golestan province. According to the seismological center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 1:59 hours local time (22:29 GMT Saturday) in an area located at 54.83 degrees longitude and 36.77 degrees latitude and in the depth of 15 kilometers. There was no immediate report on the possible damage caused by the earthquake, Moghaddam said. Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating. 1378/IRNA
