Earthquake To Strike KL, Pahang Mere Rumours - Met Dept

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) Wednesday dismissed as nothing more than rumours that the federal capital and Bukit Tinggi, Pahang would be hit by an earthquake. It said in a statement that the department did not expect any quakes to occur in the said areas in the near future, except in the event of a massive earthquake in Indonesia. It added that the magnitude 9.2 earthquake in northern Sumatra on Dec 26, 2004 and the magnitude 8.7 temblor on Pulau Nias, in western Sumatra on March 28, 2005 had caused the fault lines in Bukit Tinggi to become active again which resulted in tremors with magnitude from 1.7 to 4.2 occuring from time to time between 2007 and 2009. "As such, the people are advised not to easily believe any advice or warning circulated on the social media that does not come from MetMalaysia," it added. The people can verify any information with the department at http://met.gov.my; official mobile web m.met.gov.my or via the Facebook and Twitter pages, the department said. They could also contact the MetMalaysia hotline at 1300 22 1MET (1638), it added. -- BERNAMA
