EC confident 70% voter turnout for senator election

BANGKOK, March 23 (TNA) - The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) has expressed its confidence that about 70 per cent of total eligible voters in the country would turn out to cast their ballots in theSenate advance voting on March 23. EC Secretary-General Puchong Nutrawong said on Saturday, during a programme telecast on the state-run National Broadcasting Television (NBT) station, that, unlike the February 2 general election, Sunday's advance voting of the Senate election, set on March 30, 2014, would not fail. Puchong affirmed that the EC is now ready to organise both the March 23 advance voting and the March 30 Senate election. The election agency has projected that about 2.1 million voters should exercise their right tomorrow, as there are no signs of any political obstacle, urging voters to turn out at polling booths early in areas where they have registered to cast their ballots on the advance voting day. Based on the electoral law, sales of alcoholic drinks are banned nationwide, starting from 6pm today until midnight on Sunday. (TNA)
