EC:Thailand's next general election should be held on July 20

BANGKOK, April 24 (TNA) - An election commissioner, Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, has insisted that Thailand's next general election should be held on July 20, 2014, as it is considered appropriate. Somchai told journalists on Thursday that most political parties have also agreed that Thailand's next national poll should be organized by July 20, 2014. In response to the ruling Pheu Thai Party's call for the next election to happen a week earlier than July 20, Somchai said it is technically possible, but there might not be enough time to solve possible problems, namely repeated attempts to block the election by protesters, the printing of ballots and the appointment of officials at polling stations, which would cause damage and would not be worth doing. Somchai revealed that the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) has, however, invited the Cabinet to discuss a most appropriate election date on April 30, but he did not predict whether the EC and the Cabinet would finally reach an agreement on the election date in their upcoming discussion.
