Efforts to trace escaped Rohingya migrants continue in Thailand

SONGKHLA, Thailand, August 12 (TNA) - A command centre has been set up to help tracking 11 Rohingya migrants, who have fled from a detention centre at the Sadao district police station in the southern province of Songkhla. The Provincial Police Region 9 in Songkhla continued its efforts to find the escaped Rohingya migrants, who are believed to be heading for the Thai-Malaysian border. Police officers were deployed to comb through scrub forests and rubber plantations in the border area, where they believe the escaped Rohingyas are now hiding. On August 9, a total of 30 Rohingya migrants, who were detained in the southern province for illegally entering Thailand, escaped from the detention centre. Police managed to arrest 19 of them and brought them back to the detention centre. An official at the Sadao district police station said the 19 Rohingya migrants have been told to be patient and wait for official assistance. He also confirmed that Rohingya migrants detained at other police stations receive care and recreation in compliance with the principles of human rights. (TNA)
