EGAT asks public to not use floating lanterns near transmission lines

BANGKOK, Nov 21 (TNA) -- The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is asking for cooperation from the public to not float lanterns on Loy Kratong day near high voltage transmission lines and substations to prevent electricity generation disruptions. Suthon Boonprasong, Deputy Governor of EGAT's Transmission System said that many of the public would usually opt to float lanterns during the Loy Kratong celebrations without full knowledge of how they could disrupt electricity generations, if floated near the high voltage transmission lines and substations. He said a floating lantern could cause great damage to the power lines by short circuiting them, which could in turn cause black out in large areas and could take up time to repair, disrupting the lives of people living in affected areas and creating losses to the country's economy as a whole. He asked for cooperation from the public in looking after the high voltage transmission poles, stressing that if anyone come across an unexpected situation with the high voltage transmission lines and substations, they should call the EGAT hotline 1416 immediately to report in the occurrence.
