EGAT:Muslim mosques, cemeteries in Thai Far South won’t be moved

BANGKOK, February 23 (TNA) - The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) confirms that Muslim mosques, a religious school and Muslim cemeteries will not be moved to make way for the construction of its new power plant in Songkhla Province in the Thai Deep South. EGAT officials made the confirmation to Police Major General Surin Palarae, Secretary-General of the Central Islamic Council of Thailand and members of the Islamic committees of five southernmost Thai provinces at a meeting held on February 22. The EGAT officials stressed that EGAT has no plan to remove Muslim mosques, a religious school and Muslim cemeteries if the electricity plant is built in Songkhla’s Thepha District. The EGAT officials also told the Islamic leaders that EGAT is ready to cooperate with Thai Muslim people to develop Muslim communities and will make the electricity plant in Thepha a “genuine” plant for the Muslim community, promising that EGAT will take good care of the environment and the standard of living of local people in the area. In response, the Central Islamic Council of Thailand chief told the EGAT officials that the Islamic committees of the five southernmost Thai provinces of Yala, Narathiwat, Pattani, Satun and Songkhla are confident that EGAT will not remove Muslim mosques, a religious school and Muslim cemeteries from the construction area, suggesting that EGAT should quickly explain to local people in the area that the construction of the plant is necessary for them.
