Egypt Seeks World Support For Struggle Against Terror

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Egypt is seeking the world's unwavering support for its ongoing struggle against the acts of terror committed by the IS or ISIS militant group that beheaded 21 innocent Egyptian workers in Libya last Sunday. The Embassy of Egypt in Malaysia said Egypt sought a resolute condemnation by all friendly countries of the acts of terror which the country said constituted a massacre of innocent lives. “The Middle East region is currently suffering from the scourge of terrorism, more than any other region around the globe, whereby the actions of the terrorist organisation ISIS are aimed at destabilising the region. “Egypt’s neighbouring country, Libya, recently felt the full brunt of terrorism, aimed at destabilising the country, that would lead to the prevalence of anarchy throughout the country,” the embassy said in a statement. It said that Egypt called on the international community to take firm action with immediate effect against the terrorist group and its other affiliates that abided by the same heinous ideology. ISIS constituted a blatant threat to international peace and security, unless the international community made a solemn stance and took decisive action to combat these terrorist groups, the statement said. Following the tragedy, Egypt used its justified right to self-defence within the mandate of the United Nations Charter on Monday and carried out a limited, precise military strike against certain ISIS sites in the city of Derna, Libya. Egypt urged the International Coalition against ISIS, of which it is a member, to bear its responsibility to ensure the prevalence of peace and security on par with its warranted military strikes that targeted ISIS strongholds in Syria and Iraq in recent months. Egypt also urged the International Coalition against ISIS to closely coordinate with the government, so as to target the remaining ISIS strongholds and other affiliate terrorist organisation strongholds in Libyan territory, the statement said. It was reported that ISIS or IS released a video on Sunday showing masked people beheading 21 Egyptian workers along a beach in Tripoli, Libya. -- BERNAMA
