Eight Schools Participate in UNESCO's 'YouthMobile' Qatar Competition Doha, May 18 (QNA) - 30 students from eight schools in Qatar participated in the 'YouthMobile' Qatar Competition held at the Hamad bin Khalifa University Research Center to empower youth to develop mobile apps for Qatar's Sustainable Development Goals. The competition was a joint initiative by Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), Arab Women in Computing Qatar and UNESCO Office for the GCC and Yemen, and as part of a global initiative launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and implemented for the first time in Qatar. Opening the competition, UNESCO Representative to the GCC and Yemen Anna Paolini expressed her enthusiasm to see a large number of projects in Qatar dedicated to developing a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship through technology for young people in the country. Paolini extended thanks to the participating students and to their families and mentors for committing to the project, after the students had received intensive nine-week training on mobile application programming, coding, innovation and entrepreneurship from computer scientists as well as teachers and coding experts. The theme of the competition was "Helping My School" and its objective is to empower students to find local solutions to the problems they face in schools through mobile technology. On the importance of the Programme, Secretary-General of Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science Dr. Hamda Al Sulaiti emphasized the role that youth can play in providing solutions to society's challenges by using their mobile phones in a constructive and positive manner and contributing to achieving the fourth goal of sustainable development, which focuses on providing comprehensive education for all. Director of Educational Initiatives Management at Qatar Computing Research Institute Eman Fituri valued the importance of Qatar youth participation in the innovation process from an early age. She looked forward to expanding this program in the future. For her part, Asmaa Tabit, Member of Arab Women in Computing Qatar and leading mentor at the project, said that introducing such skills puts these students in a great position among their peers because they can reflect, refine their ideas, and perhaps launch them widely, and provide useful tools to the world.
