Election in 40 Subdistricts Delayed In Papua Province

Jayapura, Papua, April 9 (Antara) - Legislative election in 40 subdistricts in Papua Province is almost certain to be postponed at least until Thursday due to the absence of logistics, a commissioner said. Betty Wanane, a member of the Papua election commission, said here Wednesday the people in 40 subdistrict areas in the districts of Yahukimo, Nduga and Supiori would not likely cast their votes until ballot papers and other election provisions were available. "The voting process will likely take place on Thursday or Friday after the election logistics arrive in the municipal cities of the three regencies," Betty said. Among the 40 district areas, 35 are in the Yahukimo District of the country`s easternmost region, she said, adding the rest are in the districts of Nduga and Supiori. Delay in shipment to the regency of Supiori was caused partly by the technical problem of the vessel carrying the ballots so that it had to return to Biak, Betty said. Election in other areas were held as scheduled, she added.
