EP committee visits Turkish parliament

ANKARA (A.A) - Members of the European Parliament's (EP) Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality visited Turkish Parliament on Tuesday. Edit Bauer, the president of the EP committee, had a meeting with Azize Sibel Gonul, the chairperson of Turkish Parliament's Gender Equality Committee, in Ankara. During the meeting, Gonul said European Union (EU) membership was a strategic partnership for Turkey, and Turkey's EU accession would benefit to not only Turkey but also the union.  Gonul said membership of Turkey, a factor of confidence and stability in its region, would contribute to global peace and stability, spread of universal values to a wide geography, and intercultural dialogue. "Turkey has got closer to the EU in every area with comprehensive reforms it has fulfilled," Gonul said. Gonul said Turkey was planning to adopt a new and comprehensive constitution, and efforts for a new constitution was under way. Earlier on Tuesday, Turkey's EU Minister Egemen Bagis received EP delegation headed by Bauer.
