EU Leader Tusk Makes 1st Visit to Nagasaki

Nagasaki, June 26 (Jiji Press)--European Council President Nagasaki, June 26 (Jiji Press)--European Council President Donald Tusk visited Nagasaki on Wednesday, becoming the first head of the key European Union body to visit an atomic bombed city in Japan. The visit to the southwestern Japan city was made during Tusk's trip to the Asian country to attend the Group of 20 summit in the western city of Osaka from Friday. On Aug. 9, 1945, Nagasaki was flattened by a U.S. atomic bomb, three days after the United States dropped its first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, western Japan, in the closing days of World War II. On Wednesday morning, Tusk, accompanied by Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue, visited exhibition rooms in the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. He also met with Shigemitsu Tanaka, 78, head of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Council, at the adjacent Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims. END
