EU representatives follow up labor solutions in Thailand

BANGKOK, May 18 (TNA) -- Representatives of the European Union met Permanent Secretary fo Labor Puntrik Smiti to discuss solutions to labor issues in the Thai fishing industry. Ms Puntrik said the delegation inquired about the protection of legal and illegal workers’ rights, legislation and law enforcement and she informed them that Thailand already passed laws to protect Thai and foreign workers and ban the use of child labor. She also said that governmental organizations were drafting a law to govern labor use in the fishing industry. The new law will comply with the work in fishing convention of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The EU representatives also inquired about the ratification of the ILO Conventions on rights to organizing and negotiations. Ms Puntrik said the government was studying their details and planning to adjust local laws to comply with them. The EU representatives were satisfied with the responses, she said. (TNA)
