Ex-female Thai PM calls for justice in impeachment attempts

BANGKOK, January 22 (TNA) - Thailand's former female prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has called for justice, as the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) is scheduled to vote on impeachment motions against her and former House speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont and former Senate speaker Nikom Wairatpanij on January 23. Yingluck appeared before NLA at Bangkok's Parliament building on Thursday, amid tight security measures, to deliver her closing statement in relation to the impeachment motion against her, saying that she hoped to receive justice from NLA. After the closing statement, Yingluck told journalists briefly that she felt relieved as she had clarified all alleged points. Yingluck, however, refused to talk about NLA's vote on her case on Friday, saying only that it depends on NLA members and she will follow up the NLA session through television. The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) filed the impeachment motion against Yingluck for her alleged failure to stop her previous government's loss-ridden rice-pledging scheme. NLA was hearing the closing statements in the case from both Yingluck and NACC. Yingluck's lawyer, Pichit Chuenban, then complained that NACC had raised many topics which were irrelevant to the impeachment case, including government-to-government rice deals, stressing that only justice could lead to national reconciliation and unity. NLA votes on impeachment motions against the former House and Senate speakers for alleged attempts to change the make-up of the Thai Senate, also filed by NACC, will also take place on Friday. (TNA)
