Ex-Malaysian PM visits Thai South

SATUN, January 5 (TNA) - Malaysian former prime minister Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad led his entourage to visit Thailand's southern resort Satun Province on Saturday, aimed mainly to promote tourism of Satun and the growing Langkawi Island in Malaysia's northern Kedah State. Satun Governor Nuachai Jira-apirak led a provincial delegation, comprising heads of local government offices and private business operators, to welcome the former Malaysian prime minister, who paid his first-ever visit to the southern Thai resort province. The wellknown Malaysian former premier was scheduled to give a special lecture on the cross-border tourism cooperation between Satun and Langkawi, including turning the Langkawi Airport to be a tourism promotional centre for the Langkawi Island and Satun's Ta Ru Tao and Lee Pe Islands, especially for a one-day passport-waiver tour. The Thai and Malaysian sides are also considering a joint venture between Satun and the Langkawi Island on the installation and development of power system on the Lee Pe Island, as part of the cross-border tourism cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
