Executive decree in Thai far South extended

BANGKOK, December 12 (TNA) - Security authorities have decided to extend the imposition of the executive decree on public administration in emergency situations in the violence-plagued Thai far South for three more months, from December 19, 2013 to March 19, 2014. The security authorities have, however, resolved to impose the Internal Security Act (ISA) in Kabang District of the southernmost Yala Province instead due to its relieving violence. The security authorities said they will evaluate the updated situation in Kabang on the monthly basis. The resolutions came from Thursday's meeting of a government committee on the administration of emergency situations in Bangkok, chaired by Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Police General Pracha Promnok, who oversees national security. More areas likely to be under the enforcement of the ISA, instead of the executive decree, in the future include Betong District of Yala, Waeng and Sukhirin Districts of Narathiwat and Mai Kaen District of Pattani Province. National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General Lieutenant General Paradorn Patanatabutr assured that peace talks with representatives of insurgent groups in the Thai deep South would be proceeded, the new round of which has not yet been scheduled. The NSC chief said that the caretaker roles of the government would not affect the peace talks, noting that the number of violent incidents in the Thai far South has dropped during ongoing domestic political demonstrations.
