Farmers advised on how to nurture shrimps

BANGKOK, August 14 (TNA) - Thai shrimp farmers have been advised by officials from the Southern Marine Fisheries Research and Development Center (SMDEC) on how to appropriately nurture the fry, before allowing them to grow in their ponds, and to closely monitor each stage of farm practices. The officials gave the advice on Wednesday, when concerned agencies inspected shrimp farms in Chumphon province in the Thai South, as part of the government's mission to contain and stop current outbreaks of the Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) among shrimps, a major Thai agricultural export, which has caused a loss of several hundreds of millions baht since early this year. A team of officials, led by Wimol Jantrarotai, Director General of the Department of Fisheries, visited Chumphon's Tung Tako and Lang Suan districts to look into the ongoing EMS outbreaks. The visit was in response to recent reports on a drop of the provincial shrimp supply by 40 per cent from its normal production over the past few months due to the EMS outbreaks. (TNA)
