Fire-raged tyre factory ordered temporary closure

CHONBURI, THAILAND, February 2 (TNA) - The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT), under the Thai Ministry of Industry, has ordered a temporary closure of a tyre factory of LLIT (Thailand) Co.,Ltd., located in an industrial estate in the Thai East, after it was badly damaged by a strong fire on Sunday night. IEAT Governor Weerapong Chaiperm told journalists of the update on Monday afternoon, confirming, however, that there were no casualties and the blaze did not cause serious air pollution in the area. According to the IEAT governor, the blaze broke out at a Radial Tyre warehouse of the LLIT (Thailand) Co.,Ltd.'s plant in the Hemaraj Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate, located in Sriracha area of the eastern seaside Choburi Province, and spread to other nearby warehouses, but it did not reach the firm's main production building. The IEAT governor stated that IEAT has, however, ordered the temporary shutdown of the factory to ensure public safety and has blocked its sewage system around the damaged area to prevent water used to put out the flames from flowing to nearby communities, while the waste water will be properly treated through a standardised process. The IEAT governor insisted that SO2 and NO2 dust particles in the area remained within their standard levels, posing no harm to people, but IEAT has dispatched a mobile unit to frequently measure air quality in the area for the time being to ensure safety of people living in communities surrounding the factory. Damage to the 333-rai tyre factory (2.5 rais=1 acre), with its investment fund of 2.7 billion baht and a total 619 workers, was initially estimated at no less than 100 million baht, as about one million tyres have been destroyed.
