Flash floods hit Thai North

NAN, THAILAND, August 20 (TNA) - Torrential downpours have triggered flash floods in Thailand's northern Nan Province on Tuesday night, affecting locals of more than 300 households in eight villages, one of them has been missing. Nan Governor Ukrit Puengsopha and chief of provincial peacekeeping force Major General Wichak Siribansop have sought cooperation from local civil and military agencies to urgently assist the affected villagers and search for the 60-year-old missing man, who was washed away with his house located near a watershed in Thung Chang Sub-district. As the assistance has been carried on, downpours in the affected areas continued from time to time on Wednesday amid the cloudy condition. The overnight runoffs with mud caused overflows from a main waterway, called Lam Nam Ngob, in Thung Chang, swiftly flooding and damaging the affected households. Meanwhile, continual heavy downpours also caused land subsidences in several areas in the Thai North and Northeast, forcing the evacuation of people from the affected zones, including those in Pai District of the northern Mae Hong Song Province and in Phibun Mangsahan District of the northeastern Ubon Ratchathani Province.
