FM official: Iran to back any elected government in Afghanistan

Tehran, April 7, IRNA – Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour said here on Monday that Iran will support any government elected by the third presidential elections in Afghanistan. Talking to IRNA, he described the third presidential elections in Afghanistan as a very significant achievement for the Afghan nation. He said any government emerging from the democratic transition of power would enjoy Iranˈs support. Rahimpour believed that high turnout in the presidential elections manifested political maturity of the Afghan nation. He reiterated that holding the recent elections in Afghanistan which was carried out without any foreign security assistance was a brilliant political development in the country. The FM official further extended congratulations of the Iranian nation and government as a brotherly and friendly country to the Afghan administration and people. Afghan voters turned out in large numbers on Saturday in the historic presidential and provincial elections, undeterred by the threat of violence by the Taliban and poor weather. The present President of Afghanistan Hamed Karzai was chosen by Afghan leaders to head the country after the fall of the Taliban. He won two subsequent presidential elections in 2004 and 2009.
