Food minister: Turkey better than some EU countries in food safety

IZMIR (A.A) - November 23, 2011 - Turkish Food, Agriculture & Animal Breeding Minister Mehdi Eker has said that Turkey caught EU standards and even was better than some EU countries in food safety and control. Speaking to AA on Wednesday, Eker said that Turkey adopted Law No. 5996 which took EU standards as reference in May, 2010, adding that 29 regulations had been approved so far under the law. Noting that 13 new regulations would be accepted on December 13, Eker said that a new infrastructure would be shaped up in food control, while food follow-up mechanism would change in Turkey. We have also brought new regulations for consumers, food industrialists and producers.
