Foreign ministry seeking ways to help arrested Thais

BANGKOK, September 5 (TNA) -- Thailand’s Foreign Affairs Ministry is exploring ways to assist 25 Thais detained in the Laotian capital of Vientiane following a scuffle with Laotian policemen during the final soccer match between Thailand and Vietnamese teams, said a spokesman of the ministry. Spokesman Sek Wannamethee said the ministry headquarters in Bangkok is asking for details of the incident from the Thai embassy in Vientiane. The incident occurred Friday after a number of Thai fans watching the final match inside the stadium lighted a flare celebrating the second goal scored by the Thai youths. Laotain policemen then ordered the Thai fans to stop lighting the flare. Scuffle between both sides then ensued and, according to Mr Sek, 25 Thai fans were taken to police station. Thailand proved their superiority with a 6-0 win over Vietnam in the final of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-19 Championship at the National Sports Complex Stadium in Vientiane last night.
