Forest fire in Thai Far South spreading

NARATHIWAT, THAILAND, May 4 (TNA) - A strong forest fire has been raging three districts in Narathiwat Province in the Thai Far South, damaging over 600 rais of affected areas so far (2.5 rais = 1 acre). A journalists' team of Thai News Agency (TNA) used a paramotor to make an aerial survey in the affected areas of Narathiwat's Su-ngai Padi and Su-ngai Golok Districts on Wednesday and observed the spreading wildfire, from about 100 rais on May 3. The TNA team found that a strong wind has been quickly spurring the fire, while also discovering over 15 hotspots spanning in Su-ngai Padi, Su-ngai Golok and Tak Bai Districts with billowing smoke widely blanketing the affected areas. Head of the Sirindhorn Wildlife Sanctuary Wiroj Siri-umakul told the TNA team that the forest fire has begun spreading into nearby communities and Toh Daeng Peat Swamp Forest, one of the most fertile forest areas in Thailand. Wiroj said he has already sent a squad of officials to survey damages in the affected areas and to dig wells to supply water to be used for his team's efforts to ease or put out the wildfire. (TNA)
