Four Thais kidnapped in Nigeria confirmed safe

BANGKOK, August 13 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that four Thai people kidnapped in Nigeria are safe and their kidnappers have not placed a clear demand. Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesman Manasvi Srisodapol, who is also Director-General of the ministry's Department of Information, told journalists on Tuesday the company of the four kidnapped Thai workers had reported that one of the abducted Thai workers had contacted his employer Monday night and said all of them were safe and he would make another round of contact later. Manasvi quoted Thai Ambassador to Nigeria Somchai Powcharoen as acknowledging that he had assigned a minister counsellor to go to the Rivers State, where the kidnapping of the Thai workers took place, and that local Nigerian authorities had expressed their sympathy and praised Thai workers in Nigeria for their hard work. Manasvi insisted that all parties are fully cooperative to have the four kidnapped Thai people be released soon and will do whatever they can to ensure the abducted Thais' safety, while they have been detained by culprits. According to the spokesman, local police brought the representative of the Thai embassy to the kidnapping scene and told that there were about 5-6 kidnappers who should not be locals. The police, meanwhile, assumed that the kidnappers had postponed their demand to raise their bargaining power. There are about six other Thai people working for an oil company near the kidnapping scene and the Thai embassy has already warned them to take precautions. (TNA)
