Fujifilm Drug Found Effective for Alzheimer's Disease

Tokyo, July 19 (Jiji Press)--Fujifilm Corp. said Wednesday that its drug has been confirmed to be effective in reducing phospho-tau, a type of protein believed to be a causal factor in Alzheimer's disease. The unit of Fujifilm Holdings Corp. <4901> aims to put the drug, T-817MA, on sale as early as 2021. The volume of phospho-tau in the cerebrospinal fluid of disease sufferers who received the drug was reduced in a clinical trial in the United States, the company said. Furthermore, the progression of symptoms of the disease, such as declines in cognitive functions, was substantially prevented by the drug among those diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease within two years and a half, it said. Many drug makers have given up the development of Alzheimer's disease treatment drugs targeting amyloid-beta, believed to be another causal factor, due to difficulties. END
