G7 Leaders Condemn In Strongest Terms North Korea's Nuclear Test

By Tengku Faezah Tengku Yusof ISE-SHIMA (Japan), May 28 (Bernama) -- The G7 leaders have condemned in the strongest terms North Korea’s nuclear test in January this year and its subsequent launches using ballistic missile technology, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said. "G7 leaders share strong determination in order to try to build a world without nuclear weapons so as to create a better world. However, we are aware it is not an easy task to be fulfilled," he told a press conference here Friday. Abe, the chair of the G7 Ise-Shima Summit, also noted that G7 leaders play a vital role in addressing nuclear issues to the world, as the Asian security environment was becoming more and more difficult. The G7 Ise-Shima Leaders’ Declaration statement issued Friday demanded that North Korea immediately and fully comply with all relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and its commitments under the 2005 Joint Statement of the Six-Party Talks, and not conduct any further nuclear tests, launches, or engage in any other destabilising or provocative actions. The declaration pointed out that these acts violate multiple UNSC resolutions and pose a grave threat to regional and international peace and security. Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama's visit to Hiroshima on Friday made its own history by becoming the first US president to pay a visit to Hiroshima since American forces dropped an atomic bomb in 1945, killing an estimated 80,000 people and hastening the end of World War II. During his visit Friday, Obama lay a wreath at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima to honour all who died in World War II, but would not apologise for the bombing, according to reports. Besides Abe and Obama, other G7 leaders who attended the G7 Summit were President of France Francois Hollande, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom David Cameron, Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Renzi, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, President of the European Council Donald Tusk and President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker. -- BERNAMA
