Georgian CEC announces preliminary results of municipal election in Tbilisi

Tbilisi, Georgia, June 17 By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend: Georgia's Central Election Commission (CEC) published the preliminary results of the municipal election held on June 15 in the country's capital city of Tbilisi. CEC said on June 17 that the Tbilisi city mayoral candidate from the ruling Georgian Dream coalition, David Narmania gained 46.13 percent of votes according to final data. Thus, he was not able to overcome the barrier of 50 percent + 1 vote, so presumably the second round of elections will be held on June 28. Oppositional 'United National Movement' party's candidate Nika Melia will be Narmania's opponent. Melia gained 27.91 percent of the votes. In total 14 people ran for the mayor of Tbilisi. The ruling coalition 'Georgian Dream' is leading in the Tbilisi city council elections with 45.92 percent of the votes, according to the tentative results. Georgian CEC said the oppositional United National Movement ranks second with 26.18 percent of the votes. The parties and blocs, which could overcome the 4 percent barrier entered the city council. These are the ruling 'Georgian Dream' coalition, United National Movement, the 'Nino Burjanadze - United Georgia' block (with 10.51 percent), and Alliance of Patriots of Georgia (6.3 percent). Some 24 seats out of 25 in the majoritarian elections to the Tbilisi city assembly went to the Georgian Dream, one place - to an independent deputy.
