Germany ready to cooperate, expand investment in Thailand

BANGKOK, March 25 (TNA) - Germany is ready and willing to cooperate with Thailand during the latter's important transitional period currently and to expand investment in the Thai economy. German Ambassador to Thailand Rolf Peter Gottfried Schulze stressed on the stance on Wednesday, when he led a German delegation to pay a courtesy call on Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan at the Thai Ministry of Defence in Bangkok. The German top envoy also said Germany understands Thailand's situation and has no policy on interfering with the Kingdom's domestic affairs. The German ambassador indicated that the Thai interim government's implementation of a roadmap on national reform towards a new general election in the coming months is considered a major move which Germany is ready to cooperate to further strengthen and develop bilateral relations between both countries, which have been established for over 150 years. According to the German top envoy, a previous exchange visit to Germany by a delegation of the incumbent Thai government showed solid relations between Bangkok and Berlin. The ambassador insisted that German public and private sectors are ready and willing to support and expand their investment projects in Thailand, including those on infrastructure development and automobile production, as well as trade and investment in other local sectors. In response, the Thai deputy prime minister and defence minister thanked the German government for supporting the interim Thai government's roadmap on national reform and explained that the Thai government and all sectors in the society have tried to address human traffiicking issues and illegal fishing, with much progress having been seen so far. Besides, the deputy prime minister informed the German delegation that the interim Thai government is highly determined to regulate the local fishery industry in order to meet international standards, as urged by the European Union (EU), in which Germany is a key member state, to prevent it from any negative impact. Meanwhile, Thai Defence Ministry Spokesman Colonel Kongcheep Tantravanich later told journalists the Thai deputy prime minister proposed that a joint high-level Thai-German commission be set up to discuss and exchange ideas on ways to support both Thai and German projects for mutual benefits in the future.
