Global Media Forum Provides Feedback To U.N.

Nusa Dua, Aug 27 (Antara) - The 2014 Global Media Forum is expected to provide feedback to the United Nations (UN) in formulating the post-2015 work programs, stated an official. "As we know that the concept implemented during the 2000-2015 period is to enhance the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with its eight main programs," Public Information and Communication Director General from the Indonesian Information and Communication Ministry Freddy Tulung noted here on Tuesday (Aug. 26). The three-day event is attended by several local and international media representatives and media activists. Tulung explained that the programs pertinent to the MDGs are intended to overcome global issues such as poverty and hunger, basic education fulfillment, encourage gender equality and women empowerment, lower infant mortality rate, improve maternal health, fights HIV/AIDS, malaria and other infectious diseases, ensure environment preservation, and develop a global partnership for development. Currently, Indonesia`s MDGs with regard to immunization have been achieved, but routine immunization coverage is still required. "It is almost 2015, and the question is what has been the UN`s priority program post-2015?" Tulung questioned. The main agenda item of the UN`s program is to combat poverty that has not yet significantly decreased and needs greater attention. Tulung stated that the media is turning out to be a medium of education for the public to resolve the issues of the nation and state. Earlier, the Director of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the Jakarta Branch Hubert Gijzen reported that the media also plays an important role in establishing world peace.
