Gold Remains Favourite Present during Chinese New Year Celebrations

BANGKOK, Feb 7 (TNA) - Gold remains the most favourite present during the current Chinese New Year celebrations in Thailand as a person who gives and a receiver believe that he or she would be fortunate in receiving money throughout the year. General atmosphere on Sunday, the day which Thais of Chinese descent buy necessities to worship Chinese Gods and ancestors, is active while some buy red envelopes and other products containing red colour. The red colour of the envelope symbolises good luck and is supposed to ward off evil spirits. Red envelopes are usually given out by older to younger ones during holidays and festivals such as the Chinese New Year festival. Most of the gold shops along Bangkok’s Chinatown, Yaowaraj Road, are closed although a large crowd of people turned up to buy ornamental or gold bars during this special occasion. Selling of ornamental gold is quite bullish as people believe it contains positive meaning to both givers and receivers. Celebrations of Chinese New Year on Yaowaraj Road will be organised between February 8 – 9 and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will graciously preside over the opening of the fair on Monday at 5.00 p.m. In the southern province of Pattani, a large amount of people turned up at a Chinese temple named San Jao Leng Ju Khieng Shrine to pay respect to Chinese Goddess Kor Niaw. Worshippers from Pattani’s neighbouring provinces and from Malaysia as well wore red shirt and brought food and fruits along with them in worshipping her and asked that they prospered in future and sought for peace in the violence-plagued deep southern region.
