"Golgeler ve Suretler", first long film of Turkish Cypriot, Greek Cypriot actors, actresses

ANKARA (A.A) - "Golgeler ve Suretler" is the first long film in which Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot actors and actresses have taken roles.
"Golgeler ve Suretler" (Shadows and Faces), a film by Turkish Cypriot filmmaker Dervis Zaim, narrates the incidents that erupted in Cyprus in 1963, and is the first long film in which Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots acted.
It is the third and final part of Zaim's trilogy "Cenneti Beklerken" (Waiting for Heaven) and "Nokta" (Dot).
The film received awards including "Siyad Turkish Cinema Awards", "Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival" , "22nd Ankara International Film Festival", "10th Boston Turkish Film Festival", and "Yesilcam Awards."
It tells the story of a young girl who is separated from her father, a Karagoz shadow play master, during the beginning of the conflict between Turks and Greeks in Cyprus in 1963.
Cyprus was a British colony comprised of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities until 1960. The two nations were living in peace in the island.
In 1955, Greek Cypriots established an organization named EOKA, and launched initiatives to unite with Greece. Turkish Cypriots perceived it a threat, and in return they set up TMT organization, and proposed that the island be divided into two.
In 1960, Cyprus gained independence, and the plans to unite the island with Greece or divide the island were given up. A temporary peace era began.
The Greek Cypriots claimed in 1963 that the state was not fulfilling its functions, and proposed constitutional amendments whereas Turkish Cypriots did not accept the proposals.
The tension between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots speeded up intercommunal clashes. Better armed Greek Cypriots started to displace Turkish Cypriots just to unite with Greece.
