Government to boost domestic tourism

BANGKOK, April 28 (TNA) -- Ministry of Tourism and Sports is confident that tourism this year could expand as targeted by 2.4 trillion baht, as 32 per cent of the goal has been reached within the first four months of the year, generating an income of 770 billion baht, with plans to boost domestic tourism in the second half of the year. Tourism and Sports Minister Ms Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said tourism this year has expanded satisfactorily, both in the number of tourist arrivals and income, especially as income has surpassed the number of tourist arrivals as targeted, signalling that the focus on quality tourism has been successful. The minister said the number of accumulated tourist arrivals currently stands at 11,114,667, which is an increase of about 13.84 per cent when compared to the same time period in the prior year, generating an income around 563 billion baht, with an overall expansion of 17.81 per cent. With domestic tourism generating another 200 billion baht, the total tourism income for the first four months of the year current stands at 770 billion baht, accounting for 32 per cent of the ministry's total tourism income goal for 2016. The minister pointed out that the ministry has targeted to reel in an income of 2.4 trillion baht from tourism, confident that tourism growth could be stimulated as planned for the rest of the year. The ministry has already thought of new projects to promote tourism in the next 8 months, with aims to stimulate domestic tourism and daily tourism among the Thai people. Moreover, the minister informed that the ministry is set to hold, 'The Best Tourism Route of Thailand' project this year, where the 5 tourism cluster zones would choose its best tourism route to present to the ministry, after which a committee would then choose one best choice from the 16 nominated locations on May, before announcing the result on May 24. The best tourism route would be official launched to the public on June 3 during the opening of the Padung Krungkasem Floating Market, and would continually be promoted at the national level. (TNA)
