Government monitors strong baht movements

BANGKOK, April 18 (TNA) - Ministers and senior officials tasked with monetary and financial issues attended a meeting in Bangkok on Thursday, chaired by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, to discuss the ongoing strengthening of the Thai baht against the US dollar, which has affected local exporters. Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kittirat Na-Ranong told reporters that the Ministry of Finance and several other government agencies responsible for monetary and financial affairs are jointly monitoring the situation closely and he foresaw that the Thai baht should further gain slightly. Kittirat suggested that it is now a good opportunity for local importers to ship necessities into the Kingdom although local exporters have been affected by the strong baht, and that those who have gained from the strong baht should not hoard money for long-term benefits. By Thursday afternoon, the Thai baht has strengthened to 28.73 against a US dollar, compared to 28.83 baht against the greenback late Wednesday. The Thai currency has been strengthening over the past several months due to continuing capital inflows into the country and sales of US dollars by international investors. (TNA)
