Greater Air Power Cooperation In ASEAN To Face Global Threat Complexity

LANGKAWI, March 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia wants air power cooperation among ASEAN countries to be fostered in meeting the complexity of the global threats, Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein (pix) said here Wednesday. He said through this greater cooperation, the member countries would be able to enhance their confidence building measures, sharing of information, subject matter expertise and technology activities. "I call upon member states (of ASEAN) to come together fearlessly and join towards total partnership and cooperation," he said when opening an Air Chiefs' Conference at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre here. Themed "Transformation of Air Power in ASEAN Perspective," the conference was part of the program for the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2015 (LIMA'15) which started Tuesday and would end this Saturday. Hishammuddin said ASEAN members should continue to engage in dialogues, comparing best practices, bilateral and multilateral exercises. He said as the ASEAN chairman this year, Malaysia would seek to champion the region's initiative to become a modern, vital and important regional bloc. In this regard, he said ASEAN members should not demur in sharing any existing or planned domestic-level activities which could potentially create win-win outcomes. With the complexity of the global security scenarios, he said individual states could no longer hope to unilaterally address these challenges. "This is part of the reason why ASEAN members, by virtue of their common interest in the security and peace of the region, must cooperate and formulate actionable solutions to secure ourselves," he added.
