Greater Efforts Needed To Promote Quality Education - SEAMEO President

GEORGE TOWN (Penang, Malaysia), March 4 (Bernama) -- Southeast Asian countries need to put in greater efforts to promote the quality of education and further enhance educational mobility, says Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) president Prof Dr Pham Vu Luan. He said education ministers in Southeast Asia agreed to conduct various activities to promote quality education and ensure the process generated a good labour market, especially for higher education, vocational and training. "Such efforts will help contribute to the mobility of workers and students in the region," Vu Luan told reporters in his official visit to the SEAMEO Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (RECSAM) here Tuesday. Also present was SEAMEO RECSAM director Dr Mohd Johan Zakaria. Vu Luan, who is also Vietnam education and training minister said Vietnam, Malaysia and other countries in the region made great efforts, with the support of international organisations to realise quality, standard and assurance in the education sphere. "We encourage countries in the region to accept better relations and cooperation between schools and the industry to help produce a better labour market in the region," he said. He said the government-to-government cooperation agreement, as well as among the education institutions would help to realise the vision of mobility in the education sector in the region. RECSAM, a multinational educational corporation headquartered in Penang was established by SEAMEO in 1967 to nurture and enhance the quality of science and mathematics education in SEAMEO member countries namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam. -- BERNAMA
