Greenpeace concerned over GMO contaminations in Thailand

BANGKOK, October 21 (TNA) - Greenpeace Southeast Asia (Thailand) has expressed its concerns over genetically modified organism (GMO) contaminations in Thai farm products, which appear to be spreading. Greenpeace Southeast Asia (Thailand) Director Thara Buakhamsri expressed the concerns on Tuesday, cautioning that the GMO contaminations jeopardize many Thai farm plants, including cotton, corn, chili and even other crops. Thara pointed out that genetically modified (GM) plants the Thai private sector had imported for experimentation might force local farmers to only buy seeds from private operators, which could undermine national food security. Thara also warned that there have been attempts to convince the army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to revoke a Cabinet resolution in 2008 that banned experimental GMO cultivations after the discovery of GMO contaminations in 2004. Also on Tuesday, Bangkok's Supreme Administrative Court ruled to uphold an earlier decision of the Central Administrative Court by dismissing a complaint filed by Greenpeace Southeast Asia (Thailand) on genetically modified (GM) papayas under a past experimental project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
