Haze pollution in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI, March 10 (TNA) - Air pollution in Chiang Mai province remains over safety level on Friday even though heavy rain lowered hazardous smog. Smog situation in Chiang Mai has reached hazardous level with the amount of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) increased beyond the safety level of 120 milligrams per cubic metre for days. Aggravated by hot weather, low air quality prompted Chiang Mai Night Safari to take extra care of animals. Air purifiers have been installed to prevent health effects on the animals. The urban area was blanketed by thick smog, which has lowered visibility, blocking the view of Doi Suthep mount, an iconic landmark of Chiang Mai. Experts have warned against prolonged exposure to high levels of PM2.5 that could lead to many diseases including lung cancer, strokes and heart failure.(TNA)
