Haze relieves in Thai North, South

THAILAND, March 6 (TNA) - Haze has been relieving in affected areas in both the Thai North and the Thai South, thanks to measures taken so far by agencies concerned. In Chiang Mai Province in the Thai North, the Royal Thai Air Force has sent a BT-67 plane with water sprinklers to spray water to help ease haze in the province, as ordered by Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Tritos Sonjaeng, who is also Commander of the Royal Air Force's Centre for Disaster Mitigation, with the operation set from March 6-31, four trips daily, each trip spraying around 3,000 litres of water. In nearby Lampang Province, Lieutenant General Kasem Thanaporn, chief of an adhoc command for forest fire and haze control, held a meeting with Lampang Governor Thanin Suphasaen and other concerned parties to follow up the seasonal haze situation in several nothern Thai provinces. Although the smog situation has been relieving, Lieutenant General Kasem later expressed his concerns over the ongoing smog situation in the Thai North due to the dry weather with continual forest fires despite an official ban on open-air burning of materials. Based on an updated official report, particulate matters in Lampang were measured at 121 micrograms per cubic metre at a local hospital in Tasri area, slightly exceeding the standard level of 120 micrograms per cubic metre, while particulate matters in Chiang Mai were latest measured at 88-99 micrograms per cubic metre, lower than the standard level. Meanwhile, Worachet Prom-opart, Su-ngai Kolok District Chief in Narathiwat Province in the Thai far South, reported that a forest fire in the Toh Lue Bae Community has been brought under control, assessing that the remaining 10 per cent of the wildfire should be put out over the next couple of days with the relieving haze problem.
